Father's Day: A History Lesson

Father's Day is celebrated in various way around the world and on different dates. However, most celebrations are similar such as gift giving and special dinners for Fathers and other father-orientated activities. The first observance of Father's Day is believed to have been on June 19, 1910 through the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane Washington. Dodd wanted a day to be set-aside to honor Fathers such as her own, William Smart, a Civil War Veteran. Mr. Smart was left alone to raise a family after his Wife died while giving birth to their 6th child when Sonora was 16 years old. In 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first Presidential Proclamation honoring Fathers, designating the 3rd Sunday in June as Father's Day. In 1972 President Richard M. Nixon signed it into law.

On behalf of our members in the Chapel Hill Leads Group I proudly say, to all of our Fathers, Happy Father's Day.

I invite to join me Wednesday morning at the Chapel Hill Leads Group. Remember to bring a smile on your face, a skip in your step and humor in your heart.

Respectfully,

Lee Schearer
