Creating Easter Memories (April 4, 2007)

The Durham Rescue Mission is looking to collect Easter baskets for at-risk children to be given during their Annual Easter Community Dinner. They anticipate needing over 1000 baskets. Let's see what we can do to help them meet their goal!! Last year, Town Planner coordinated an effort that collected 100 baskets!! If a lot of folks just bring one basket a piece, it will add up quickly. We strive to make philanthropy easy!!

The Easter baskets should contain a combination of both toys & candy. Wal-Mart & Roses have pre-made Easter baskets for $5! They need to be collected by me no later than April 4th.

Baskets should be brought to either the Chapel Hill Leads Group or to my weekly BNI meeting, I will load up my vehicle with the baskets at that time. (Contact me at 919.491.9904 or corprew@townplanner.com if you would like more information on those meeting times & locations.)

Here's the full scoop on the Durham Rescue Mission Easter Dinner from Rodney McClain, the volunteer coordinator.

100% Day (March 25, 2007)

Once or twice a year The Great Harvest Bread Co. turns the bakery over to a worthy non-profit cause for an entire day. This year, on March 25th the Great Harvest Bread store belongs to Angels Among Us which benefits the The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke.

After losing a dear friend and neighbor, Sherry Brinton, to brain cancer last year, the choice was easy for Bob and Joan Krueger, owners of Great Harvest in Chapel Hill.

Now, Sherry’s husband Ron is busy volunteering to raise funds to fight brain cancer through “Angels Among Us” (www.angelsamongus.org) To support Ron’s effort, the Krueger's are turning all proceeds (not just profit), up to $5000, from the sale of bread on March 25th along with the sale of vouchers for bread for those who cannot make it to the store that day.

You can either purchase vouchers in the store or simply visit the store on Sunday, March 25th from noon to 4 PM.

Congratulations to everyone for their material and financial contributions to making this project a success. As of the last week your efforts resulted in the collection of 34 boxes of school supplies and over $600.00 of financial contributions for the shipment of the supplies. A very big thank you goes out to Kim Piracci, Jewelry Appraiser for her efforts and contributions in making this event a success for the children of Iraq and the American Military Troops. Kim is still accepting paperback books for the soldiers in Iraq.

The Chapel Hill Leads Group collected selected materials for an Iraqi School Building Project. The collection date was August 9, 2006 during the regular Chapel Hill Leads Group meeting. This effort was coordinated by Kim Piracci, of Kim Piracci GG Jewelry Appraiser.

August 27 (Update) - Iraqi School Building Project and American Troop Support

To date, here are several boxes received by Dave in Iraq. However, the mail is a bit slow. The boxes are getting though to our men and women in the military in Iraq and they are very excited.

The school supplies are in a special place and arrangements have been made to deliver them right before school starts, which should be soon. Right now it is too hot for school. Additional pictures of the kids will be taken once they return to school.

They have set up a "library" in a few of their common areas to allow people to take out books and then bring them back for others to enjoy.

One of Dave's coworkers enjoys the "peanuts" provided by the Leads Group. "All of our men and women are excited about everything" the Chapel Hill Leads Group has done for them. The mail clerk sent Dave an email stating "that she has never seen such a popular guy".

September 11 (Update) - Iraqi School Building Project and American Troop Support

We see one of the Iraqi teachers and several of his students preparing to receive the school supplies donated by the Chapel Hill Leads Group. The young boy in the front, next to Dave, appears to express the universal opinion shared by all children regardless of culture when it comes to "getting ready for school".

Educators quickly learned that "all study and no recess makes for a distracted student". Dave presents the students with soccer balls to exercise their bodies and refocus their energies from the civil strife. The future of the Iraqi World Cup Soccer team seems to be in the eyes of the young boy in the red shirt.

November 13 (Update) - Iraqi School Building Project and American Troop Support

The Iraqi School mission is still active. Kim has provided the following additional news from Iraq.

Ms Kim,

Today me and some Americans went to the children's hospital and handed out the Bennie Babies. I only gave out 2 boxes because I was not sure how many people where there. I was shocked at the numbers and am sad to say that I did not give out all of them. I will be doing this again with the other box of toys.

I have attached some pictures of the kids with there toys. Thanks again for the toys and they where very well welcomed by the kids and the adults.

Dave

Ms Kim,

I am not in the green zone. I go out about 5 times a week to the Baghdad city area and work there with the Iraqi Police. So if the guy with the cookies is willing to send them then I will get them to the troops that I go with. Also the guys that I am with in the area go out with the troops also. I will give some to them and get some good pictures for you. I am right now going out with about 15 Military personnel. So if you want to send for that I am sure that they would love it.

I have not gotten to the children's hospital again. I went once to have a look. I am trying to set it up to go this week. I talked to the administrator and he was very welcome to the idea of the stuffed animals. So when I get the military talked into it then I will take the toys there and give them to the kids. Also if you would like to send cookies I know that like all kids they would love them.

Thanks for everything that you and the people that you know are doing for the troops. It means a lot to them to know that they are still thought of and not forgotten about by the people of the US.

Thanks and have a great day

Dave

January 22, 2007 (Update) - Iraqi School Building Project and American Troop Support

The Iraqi School mission is still active. Kim has provided the following additional news from Iraq.

Ms Kim,

I am sorry that it has taken so long to get with you. I did get the cookies and they where a huge hit. I passed them out and everyone was loving them. I was wondering if you can get me the address for the guy that made the cookies. I have a guy that likes them and wants to write a thank you letter.

I would love books. I can get them to the guys here.

Thanks for everything

Dave
